Jelsa
With its elegant 19th century facades, at the border
with fields from the period of ancient Romans and Greeks, Jelsa takes us
back to a century old culture of its island. Grapeeva špilja in the
vicinity is a craddle of Hvar's civilization, important for the whole
neolithic Mediterranean area. The question of the origin of constructors
of the misterious Tor, the fortress above the town, remains unsolved:
were they Illyrians or Greeks? Unanswered questions from distant history
of Jelsa make us think about past times.
However, Jelsa is one of the most vivid island towns,
built around picturesque square touching the seaside on one side, and on
the other approaching the church of St. Fabian and St. Sebastian. The
town ramifies into many streets dominated by pjaceta (local word for a
small square) with St. John's church, which, as the Jelsa itself,
underwent many reconstructions. Once Jelsa was a town of navigation and
vine, today it lives mostly on tourism.
