Croatia
(
4,6 mln inhabitants, 56.542 km2)
|
|
| “Half
moon” shaped
Croatia
contains the
areas
Istria
,
Slavonia
and
Dalmatia
and has a
remarkable rich architectural heritage. It is a country with many faces,
connecting mid and southern
Europe
and a fascinating
melting pot of cultures and influences: Ilyrians, Kelts, Greek, Romans,
Croats (of course), Venetians, Italians, Ottomans, Hungarians,
Austrians: they all ruled and left their traces.
|
| Respect
for nature is deeply rooted in society, evidenced by the 8 unspoiled
National Parks with e.g. the famous 92 waterfalls rich lake district
Plitvice, that is a protected area since the late 19th
century. Animals that you would only expect in far flung exotic
countries have their habitat in the wood covered mountains: over 400
bears, wolves, wild cats, lynx, mouflon and chamois, next to a rich
variety of birds mainly in the Slavonian moor areas bordered by the
rivers Drava, Sava and Danube. |

The Island
of
Hvar
(12.000
inhabitants)
|
|
| Hvar is one of the 1185
Islands
along the 1750-km Croatian coastline and is the pearl in the crown of
the Dalmatian archipel. According to the American magazine
“Traveller” Hvar takes it’s place among the top 10 most beautiful
islands in the world, together with e.g. Bali, Mykonos, and Capri.
|
| On
a length of 68 km and width between 5-11 km, you will find the typical,
mountain rich (peaking 628m) landscape of the south
Adriatic Sea
comparable with
those on
Sicily
,
Sardinia
and
Madeira
. No surprise that
the island produces some very tasty red and white wines! |
| |
| The
town of
Hvar
(3.700
inhabitants)
|
|
| In 385 BC,
Greek sailors and traders from the
island
of
Paros
founded Hvar, then called
Dimos. From
219 BC the Greek had to make room for the Romans followed by the
Byzantines, the Croatian-Hungarian monarchy and the
Venetian
Republic
in 1420.
|
| The
Venetians used Hvar as one of their main ports in the Adria with a
booming trade as a result. Prosperity ended however by Turkish attacks
in 1571. Early 19th century Napoleon ordered the construction
of new roads and the enlargement of the fortress of Hvar situated on a
strategic hill and hence with beautiful views! |
| In 1870
Hvar was already known as a holiday resort for the well to do that used
to stay at the “Palace Hotel”, then the first luxurious hotel on the
Dalmatian coast.
|
| Since the indepedence war was ended, Hvar
has resumed it's position as major tourist attraction now known as the
St.Tropez of the Croatian coast, though less exploited, at a smaller,
human scale and with more respect for nature as it's counterpart on the
Côte d'Azur. |
| No
doubt this ancient port will put you under a spell!
Surrounded by fortress crowned hills, situated in a deep bay, protected
by a garland of islands, crystal clear water murmuring against the
quay-walls, the gently gliding ships, the shiny limestone pavements, the
central square with it’s elegant buildings, the small step streets,
the vicinity of beaches and islands and it’s friendly, hospitable
people, most of them multilingual…..
